Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte is ready to build a “lower the boom fund” upon hearing about the new rule which appears to give defenders a slight break.
Effective this season, runners can no longer lower their heads and in the process, lead with the crown of their helmet while approaching oncoming defenders.
The rule change, made at the NFL owners meeting in Arizona, is being implemented to assist with player safety.
The vote proved to be a landslide. Only the Cincinnati Bengals prevented a unanimous sweep in the 31-1 vote.
Meanwhile, Forte took to Twitter to express his displeasure at a rule that will surely be under the microscope throughout the 2013 season.
Wow so they really passed that rule…last time I checked football was a contact sport. Calling bank now to set up my lowering the boom fund—

Recently, former Cowboy great and the NFL’s all-time leading rusher, Emmitt Smith, spoke out against rule by calling it “ridiculous.”
Soon after, Jim Brown, arguably the greatest runner of all-time, added a contrasting point of view by indicating great runners didn’t need to lower their heads.
Well, considering how much time defenses spend getting whipped by passing games, it’s good to see the league did them a solid.
Remember kids, it’s a quarterback’s world and we (including running backs) are just living in it.
Cheers to defenses everywhere.
